There is a special joy in receiving flowers, whether it’s a dozen red roses from Dolly’s Florist or a fistful of fresh flowers hand picked from your garden. Flowers can add a special touch to the room and they can make people happy! As well as their beauty, fragrant roses add a wonderful aroma that is hard to beat and you want to make sure they last as long as possible. Unfortunately though, flowers wilt. Do you ever feel delighted to receive beautiful flowers only to feel a little depressed as you watch them fade? While you can’t bring cut flowers back to life, here are some tips from Dolly’s Florist for keeping them looking fresh longer.
How To Keep Your Roses Fresh:

  • Prepare Roses: Flowers keep best when cut with a sharp knife (un-serrated) and plunged immediately into water. Always make a cut on a slant, as it exposes more stem surface area. Also, remove leaves that will be under water in the arrangement, because they can decay and create bacteria, but do not remove the thorns as it tends to shorten their life. Also any damages to the stem can prevent uptake of water through the stem.
  • Flower Preservative: Arrange fresh-cut roses in a vase with water that contains flower preservative. All roses arrange in a vase purchase at Dolly’s come with flower preservative already. Avoid water with other additives, like soap or other household cleaning products.
  • Sunlight: Keep roses away from sunlight or any extreme temperatures.  This will shorten their vase life.
  • Stragglers: You may run into a few stubborn roses that may start to wilt within a short time, which is not a problem. If a fresh rose wilts, cut off the bottom of the stem and submerge the entire flower in warm water horizontally for about an hour.
  • Change Water: Roses are thirsty flowers. Check the container regularly and make sure there is plenty of water. You should change water every day to avoid bacterial build-up.
